Making Money with a Video Blog
Here’s a quick and relatively easy way to get some adsense cash flowing into your mailbox. The concept is basically an “video aggregation model”. All you will be doing is setting up a Wordpress Blog with the correct video plugin so you can embedd and pull videos from Youtube into your blog and drive virally growing traffic to your site. You can either create a video blog with any sort of videos or even choose to focus on a particular subject or theme / vertical. Choose something that interests you and you will be passionate aobut.
Step #1 - Setup a Google Adsense Account.
If you dont have one already, head over to Google Adsense and sign up for an acocunt. Once your account is all setup you will need to get your text banner codes and place them around your videos by directly editing the video template files from with the wordpress interface. More on that later.
Step #2 - Create a blog
There are two ways to do this. Either, go to Wordpress.com and create a hosted blog with them with your own subdomain space such as yourname.wordpress.com or setup your own domain name and hosting account and then download the free wordpress script from wordpress.org and install it on your domain in 15 minutes flat. Its pretty simple to install and should be a piece of cake for those familiar with setting up php scripts and MySQL database. If you don’t know how to do that - search the web, there are plenty of sites that will walk you through the process.
Step #3 - Get the plugins!
Once you have your Wordpress site up and ready you need to download and install some plugins into your wordpress system that will allow you to add some features. I have created a demo site here for you to see what your video blog will finally look like.
Plugins you need -
a) Viper’s Video Quicktags - With this plugin you can simply insert the URL of the Youtube or Google video link and it will do the rest of the embedding for you. Its very nifty.
b) Wp-email - This plugin will allow visitors viewing your videos to invite their friends to see the video. It allows the viral effect to kick into your site.
c) WP-Post Ratings - Will increase the interactivity on your website by allowing visitors to vote for videos.
d) Sociable - Adds a series of icons of social web2.0 bookmarking sites, so your visitors may bookmark any interesting videos .
e) Akismet - A plugin that will keep spam away. It comes with the default wordpress installation. An absolute must have in todays age of auto-spam-bots.
Step #4 - Get burned!
In order to stay in touch with your readers you need to give them a tool through which they can subscribe to your websites updates and “feeds”. Head over to Feedburner to setup your account and get going. If you dont know what Feedburner is look it up in Wikipedia.
Step #5 - Get a Wordpress Theme
There are countless wordpress themes that you can skin your blog with. Try this site for starters or go here for a select list of good themes.
Once your blog is configured and all set to go… start aggregating videos from Youtube. Its all legal! You can either add any sort of videos or even choose to focus on a particular subject or theme. Start promoting your posts by going to pingomatic.com and start passing the good viral videos to your friends.
Some tips -
+ Configure wordpress with the “permalinks” feature activated
+ Add a few categories and make them with catchy and appropriate names
Google Adsense Integration -
Make sure you insert Google Adsense banners appropriately on your website. Insert text or image ads that blend in with your sites theme and colors and do not clash the colors. Use similar link colors and text colors in your ad units as on your blog. The idea is to synchronize with the colors rather than to make jarring ads. You can have a 768×90 banner put up right on top of each page by editing the header.php file from inside your Wordpress admin login interface - goto the “theme editor” to do this. Also, put some text or/and image ads next to each video. Google allows you only to put at maximum 3 contextual display ads per page - and it automatically hides any excess ads now - so you dont need to worry. You can also put in link units. Try a few different combinations and see what works for you best as you go along. If you are adventurous, there are other affiliate banners and other ad network ads that you may insert. Just be sure that you dont violate Google’s Terms of Service by inserting another contextual PPC ad network ads.
